The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) continues to uncover the powerful connection between humans and pets. More than 1 in 5 U.S. pet owners say a doctor or therapist has recommended pet ownership, highlighting how animals are no longer viewed as “just nice to have,” but as an essential part of overall health—especially mental health.
From homes and schools to workplaces like Chewy, pets are increasingly welcomed as companions that support human well-being.
Pets Reduce Feelings of Loneliness
Loneliness has long been a social epidemic, even before the COVID-19 pandemic intensified feelings of isolation. Today, 1 in 5 Americans report lacking deep social connections.
Pets help bridge that gap. In a HABRI and Mars Petcare survey:
- 80% of pet parents said they turn to their pets when they feel lonely.
- 54% reported that pets help them connect with others in their community.
By offering unconditional love and a sense of purpose, pets combat loneliness while also serving as natural social icebreakers.
Pets Foster Connection and Community
Research across the U.S. and Australia shows pet ownership strengthens community bonds.
- Dog parents often meet neighbors during walks, forging regular social interactions.
- Other pet parents—27% in the study—reported meeting neighbors through conversations sparked by cats, birds, reptiles, or small mammals.
Pets act as social catalysts, encouraging conversations that sometimes grow into community gatherings.
Pets Encourage Mindfulness and Focus
Mindfulness means slowing down and paying attention to the present moment—something pets naturally encourage.
- Cats: Their body language teaches us to observe closely and respond with understanding. A flicking tail, for instance, signals irritation or anger.
- Children in classrooms: Studies show pets improve social skills, boost academic reading competence, and reduce hyperactivity. Parents also noticed more empathy and caring behaviors at home.
By helping us focus on the small details and fostering emotional awareness, pets guide us toward a more mindful way of living.
